What is it??

This is my handsome dog "Sammy". The round object on front of him is made from aluminium and washed ashore on the west coast of Ireland. Its not waterproof and that piece of string was attached. Anyone have any ideas what it is used for?

The "Bridget Carmel" with its fishing gear raised up to aid repairs. The very efficient nets have a chain mat on its belly which is designed to take high value flat sea bed dwelling fish out of their homes and into the net. Is it efficient? Yes it is, the downside of this efficiency at catching fish is the inefficiency of towing this type of gear. its very heavy and results in high fuels consumption. It can be several thousand Euros a day depending on the size of the gear.

All the way from Canada!

These were found washed up on the west coast of Ireland. After sending a mail to the Fisheries Dept in Newfoundland they confirmed that they were identification tags used by fishermen over there to identify there lobster traps.
The colours identify different years and the numbers are allocated to different fishermen. I am awaiting more details to try and locate the owners.
