A view into the hopper of a pelagic trawler. The main species this vessel was targeting was Scad or also called Horse Mackerel. The fish with the stripes is mackerel. The little orange guys are Boarfish. All these species are targeted as a main species by vessels and as you can see it is very difficult to keep one species in the net and allow the other species escape, particularly when the fish are off similar size and behave the same.. There is restrictions of the amount of other species a vessel can retain on-board when targeting one species or a group of species. The scad and Mackerel are processed and stored for human consumption, the Boarfish is fished for its high oil content. |
